Personal History: The Morello family is a large, magically-inclined family known for making the best Charms money can buy. These Charms can be used for all sorts of things - good luck, protection, you name it - and they’ve given the family a reputation. Bailey was born without any sort of ability to make charms, seemingly without any inclination for magic at all, and that was considered bizarre. It would quickly become apparent, though, that while Bailey lacked magic they were not lacking in ability.

Bailey’s ability to communicate with the dead that had not yet passed on became apparent at a young age. Mediums are incredibly rare, but not unheard of, so when Bailey began talking about a woman living in the Morello’s home their mother assumed that maybe it was more than an imaginary friend. When Bailey mentioned the woman was murdered, she knew for certain. She tried to discourage Bailey from talking to this ghost, but Bailey was stubborn and wanted to help her, because the woman seemed so sad.

The woman was Maribelle Hutchison - she had lived at the Morello’s home more than a century before the family moved in, and she had been murdered there. The young Bailey spent most of their time talking to her, trying to get to know her and coming up with all sorts of ways to make her seem happier. They were worried about her, and she was their first - and only - friend. They wanted to figure out something that would make her smile again, and they spent weeks, months, years trying to figure it out. Maribelle inspired Bailey, in a way, and as they got older they became more and more aware of the ghosts of New Lodgins. New Lodgins is a large, bustling city in the Southern United States, known for it’s supernatural population - one of the largest populations being entirely unknown, because while people are aware ghosts exist, it’s incredibly rare to be able to communicate with them.

Bailey wanted to change that. They began offering their services as a medium as a teenager, going from home to home and talking to the spirits that resided within. While nearly every home in a city as storied as New Lodgins might have a spiritual hanger on, only powerful ghosts - dangerous ones - would be noticed by the families living in those homes. This made ghost busting - ghost counseling? - incredibly dangerous, as these spirits were volatile and unpredictable and just as likely to lash out as they were to listen. But Bailey, if they couldn’t help the ghost move on, wanted to at least bring peace to the spirit and the family living in the haunted house. They had more than a few tangles with poltergeists and spirits that left them battered, bruised, and bleeding, but they didn’t want to give up.

This was Bailey’s calling - they spent more time focused on helping ghosts than on their studies, or on forming bonds with the living. They always felt awkward and uncomfortable with the living, anyways, because one of the abilities that was part and parcel with being a medium was empathy, which always felt so incredibly invasive to them. Still, they were aware that if they truly wanted to make a career out of helping ghosts, they would need to be successful at all areas of their life. They managed to graduate high school with a respectable GPA, and went on to college to study psychology.

Their time in college was largely unremarkable. They kept to themself and were as studious as can be, while still offering to help haunted families on the side. They managed to gain a reputation as a ghost whisperer, which Bailey was mildly embarrassed by. After graduation, they weren’t sure what to do - pursue a masters? Find a job? Start freelancing? They decided to get a job at the New Lodgins Supernatural Support Agency, an agency designed to cater to the welfare of the supernatural population of New Lodgins. They offered services for vampires, weres, people like Bailey who were granted abilities - and Bailey thought they could offer more. They were still surprised when they agreed to hire Bailey and fund Bailey’s ghost counseling endeavours, but they were happy they could now support themself and follow their dreams.

The first year of their counseling gig went as smoothly as could be expected. Some ghosts were willing to talk, some weren’t, and some tried to kill Bailey. It was just what they were used to. And then, one day, Bailey was approached by a woman named Sylvia. Sylvia had been an Agent for the Tempest, an agency built to deal with supernatural threats and intervene when problems arrive. Sylvia had quit her job after the gruesome death of her squad leader Cai, and that death had led her to Bailey. She wanted Bailey to pass on a message to their dead leader - unaware that Bailey was already seeing Cai as a patient - and after a few months of constantly running into each other, Sylvia and Bailey managed to become friends.

It was Sylvia and Cai’s odd situation that made Bailey curious - Cai, as an Agent, was giving a charm that would increase good luck. Dying in an accident with a good luck charm should have been impossible, so how did Cai die? Using the backing of the NLSSA, Bailey was able to get access to Cai’s belongings - including her charm. Between their extrasensory abilities and their familiarity with charms as part of the Morello family, Bailey was able to include that the charm was a fake. There was no magic, and they couldn’t fathom why someone would do that. They told Sylvia this, despite knowing that for confidentialities sake they couldn’t, but this entire situation struck them as Wrong and they wanted to get to the bottom of it. The ex-Agent agreed to help investigate, though neither of them were sure where to start first.

Personality: Generally calm and patient, Bailey is a quiet, reserved person. They grew up feeling the emotions of others, and as such had a hard time figuring out what was their own and what was somebody else’s. They distance their emotions from themself, not sure what to do with them, and because of this they come across as incredibly mellow and relaxed. Not much seems to bother them, the medium seeming remarkably unflappable in even the most dangerous of circumstances, but the truth of the matter is Bailey is just very, very good at hiding their emotions. They’ve had a lot of practice pushing things down, after all.

But, of course, Bailey is not as cool and collected as they appear to be on the surface. Not having strong reactions doesn’t mean Bailey doesn’t have strong feelings. They’re just better at hiding it, as they quickly discovered people don’t like it when you display emotions - especially ugly ones. Bailey’s family wasn’t intentionally cruel, but they didn’t like the way Bailey would act out. They tried to discourage this when they were a child, and this resulted in Bailey deciding it was best to just hide everything. All their thoughts, all their feelings - especially when those thoughts and feelings were the result of catching someone else’s emotions - pushed down because of their family’s disapproval. Making a scene was improper, and Bailey’s family was old, powerful. It wouldn’t do to tarnish their name.

So, Bailey practiced the long-respected art of “conceal, don’t feel”. They appear every bit the calm, patient guide they want to be seen as, and push down everything most everything else. That’s not to say they’re not without humor, though. While they’re not one to fall to laughing fits, they do have a rather dorky sense of humor. They have a fondness for puns, and aren’t above a friendly bit of teasing. It’s just as reserved as everything else about them, and they try not to be cruel intentionally or unintentionally. They like bringing a smile to someone’s face, though. They want to fix problems, to make people happy, and finding a way to make someone smile… That means a lot to them. They’ve put in a lot of effort to learn a wide-variety of jokes and memes from different periods of time, so they can tell jokes to the ghosts they encounter and have them actually be understood. They’re especially fond of old puns and wordplay, though they usually end up making their patients and friends groan.

With the right person, Bailey can relax. Most of these right people just happen to be ghosts, but there’s a few living people like Sylvia who get to see the real Bailey. The real Bailey is still quiet and gentle, but they have a stubborn streak and aren’t as serious as they can come across. Around the right people, Bailey can show their emotions even though it still makes them uncomfortable. They dislike things like crying in front of others, but if they trust someone it’s not as unbearable. They still want people to see them as a calm, guiding force, but people like Sylvia and the countless ghosts they know can get to see the ugly parts of Bailey, as a treat.

On top of their stubborn streak - which might be more than a streak, considering they don’t back down from anything and have definitely come close to getting into legal trouble because of it - Bailey lacks a bit of self-preservation. Sometimes, spirits and ghosts and poltergeists can be dangerous, and when you’re trying to actively engage with them you can easily find your life threatened. This hasn’t stopped Bailey, who feels like it’s their duty to help those who are trapped, and they have the scars to show for it. They’ve been hospitalized more than once because of tangling with a poltergeist, but that hasn’t stopped them. They’re going to try to help until they die, and they’re okay with the possibility that they might die trying to help a spirit. It’ll be worth it, if they can just make a difference.

Bailey has seemingly infinite patience, and is always willing and ready to support people in their times of need. They’re endlessly kind and sympathetic, and part of that came from learning the inner-workings of people in college, and part of that is just inherent in who they are. They’re a kind, generous, soft sort of person who puts others before themself and wants other people to be as happy and safe as they can possibly be. They’re a good listener, always willing to lend an ear, and they try their best to offer advice when it seems like people are willing to accept it. They don’t try to force people to change or do things, but if people want to change they’ll be there to support them in it. They’re generous with their time and their gifts, often going to investigate haunted houses without wanting any sort of payment, because they just want to help. As long as they’ve made someone smile, or if they’ve made things safer, they’ll be happy. That’s all they want, and every person they help makes them feel just a little bit better about themself.
